She proves to be smarter than all men by ignoring the captain’s commands and doing what she thinks is right. In the opening scene she wakes up early in the morning to do her chores, which shows responsibility. She also possesses other unique characteristics. To find a balance between both, she goes to battle to bring honor to her family and prove to herself and her father she is worthwhile. She is struggling to find who she is, and is facing a conflict between what she wants and what her family has planned for her. Mulan is a character like other Disney heroines she is beautiful with a curvaceous figure and a beautiful voice. There seems to be some positive and negative messages sent to children, whether it is through a song, a character, or an animal. However, what one fails to notice are the subliminal messages and stereotypes hidden between the lines. It seems as if children cannot be exposed to something more innocent or dreamy as a Disney movie. They speak of prince and princesses, happy songs enchanted by astounding voices, and magic. They have always told fairy tales about how good triumphs evil, how the girl gets the man of her dreams, and how they live happily ever after. Furthermore this movie reflects the role of women in the Chinese culture, without keeping in mind that children everywhere are exposed to it.ĭisney movies represent a phase in every person’s life, childhood. However recent Disney movies are trying to reduce such stereotypes and incorporate as many diverse characteristics as possible. The animals are associated with good or evil therefore creating either positive connotations, like dogs, horses, and rabbits, or negative ones, like falcons and vultures. Mulan is a heroine that presented positive characteristics not found in many other Disney characters. The heroine, villain, animals, and remaining characters present some positive and negative stereotypes that unconsciously reach the minds of children.
